Isaac Charles, Sports Graduate at The Leys, Cambridge, has been awarded FIH (International Hockey Federation) Indoor Umpiring status. This is the highest rank in the game and is achieved by fewer than one in a thousand who take it up.
He began aged nine and at 12 he qualified to begin umpiring adults. Now 22, he has his sights set on becoming an umpire at the Olympic Games. There is only one such job, though, and his brother Jake is after it as well!
The brothers became the first siblings to be appointed to the same Division 1 match in the English Hockey Leagues in 2020 and have achieved the highest umpiring rank in the game.
Darrel Cassidy, Head of Hockey at The Leys, said: “Isaac can do pretty much anything, hockey-wise, and is a very useful man to have around.”
