From the war in Syria to global warming, from ISIS to relations with Russia, world leaders have their work cut out – and Reigate Grammar School students were in training for their turn on the global stage at Reigate Grammar School’s Model United Nations (ReiMUN) conference last week.
Students from 25 schools made up the teams undertaking diplomacy, negotiation and public speaking to the whole conference as they wrestled with simulated real-life problems – the problems that their parents’ generation have failed to solve and so may very well fall to them in their turn as they take the baton of leadership.
Headmaster Shaun Fenton said: “The students have worked incredibly hard on organising this conference for months and it has been a wonderful opportunity for them to develop their international-mindedness and leadership skills.
“This conference has made them recognise just how hard the job of the United Nations is – attempting to reach agreement and consensus for the good of humanity between 200 countries is seemingly impossible but ultimately doable with diplomacy and determination.”
