The Marist Senior School in Sunninghill was incredibly proud to learn last week that artwork by two of their Year 12 pupils has been selected and presented for the prestigious A-level Royal Academy Summer Exhibition Online.
The Marist pupils, had their work shortlisted from over 1,280 aspiring artists in college or at Sixth Form who submitted their work to the Royal Academy. Thirty-six outstanding works of art have been chosen for exhibition by the expert panel including a painting of a 1950s Housewife by Marist pupil Eva Viskovic, age 17. The RA also commended a further 70 works which have been shortlisted, including a burnt wood sculpture by fellow Year 12 Student, Amy Shortis, age 16.
Having your work chosen to appear in the A-level Summer Exhibition Online is one of the greatest accolades in the art world for this age group. Many of these young artists will go on to develop their talents at Art School and in their careers beyond. Works are entered from all over the UK and showcase a rich variety of styles and media; from drawing and video to sculpture and prints, painting and photography. This year, the panel of judges included Curator of this summer’s Radical Geometry exhibition Dr Adrian Locke, RA Schools student Julie Born Schwartz and Humphrey Ocean RA, one of Britain’s most successful contemporary painters.
Staged to coincide with the world’s largest open entry exhibition, the Summer Exhibition, this online equivalent for artists aged 16–18 signals an exciting future for art in this country.
Head of Art, Mrs Ellwood said: “Henri Matisse once said that ‘Creativity takes Courage’. Every pupil who chooses a pencil or paintbrush contemplates the work they create and in the pieces produced by Eva and Amy, courage is a particularly relevant theme. I’m inspired and awestruck by the creativity and excellence of the students at the Marist. Equally, I am unbelievably proud of Eva and Amy who deserve this incredible success and accolade!”
