Leading independent school Clifton College has appointed Mrs Jo Newman as the new headmistress of Butcombe, Clifton College’s Pre-Prep. She will replace Dr Wendy Bowring, who is retiring in July. Mrs Newman will join the school in September from Yateley Manor Prep School in Hampshire, where she has been head of the Pre-Prep for the past five years.
Following an extensive search, Clifton College appointed Mrs Newman to build on the school’s impressive academic results, while preserving the benefits of its strong and caring community.
Mr Mark Moore, Clifton College head of College, commented: “Mrs Newman is an experienced and impressive headmistress and we are delighted to welcome her to Clifton College. Dr Bowring has done a remarkable job over the past eighteen years at Butcombe and we are confident that Mrs Newman will be able to manage the transition smoothly and help the school go from strength to strength.
“Butcombe plays a key role in the development of our pupils and lays the foundations for their progression in the Pre and Upper Schools. Mrs Newman already has valuable experience of working closely with other headmasters in a similar structure and will help to deliver a stimulating, motivating and challenging curriculum across the school.”
Mrs Newman said: “Clifton College is renowned for its excellent teaching, outstanding pastoral care and high quality facilities, and I am truly excited to be given this opportunity.
“I am committed to continuing Dr Bowring’s excellent work in providing a caring and welcoming environment where young children will develop a love of learning to help give them the best start in life.”
Mrs Newman trained at Brunel University, receiving a BSc and an MSc before gaining her PGCE and moving into teaching. Outside her role as headmistress, Mrs Newman is a keen sportswoman and is extremely passionate about the outdoors. She enjoys walking, climbing and triathlons.
